“So, where are we going?”

“The heliport.”

He glides away from the curb and picks up speed.

I frown. “Why?”

He casts me a wicked grin. “Why d’you think?”

I’m sure it’s no big deal for him to be whisked off in a helicopter. But,hell, I’ve flown nowhere in my life. I’m so excited I could squeal. It’s hard not to.

“How cool,” I say with a sweet smile and a bat of false eyelashes. “What a lovely surprise.” We fall into silence for a few moments. “So, how was your day?”

“Back-to-back meetings like usual.”

“Kinda busy, then?”

“Always.” He navigates the streets at a fast pace.

“I’ve been busy, too. Business is really picking up,” I lie.

“Not surprising—you have a lot of talent. Word will get around.”

Inside, I glow with the compliment before I knock my ego into shape with a baseball bat. He’s just buttering me up. He doesn’t mean it.

Throughout the journey to the heliport, I feel his gaze on me—burning a path over my legs and bare arms.

“So it’s quite far, where we’re going?”

“Too far by road, obviously.”

My false laughter tinkles in the air. “You love your secrets, don’t you? Where we’re going, what you do for a living...what else you got tucked up your sleeve, Neal?” I brush my finger up and down his thigh provocatively.

He growls low in his throat. The sound thrills me. And scares me just as much.

“It’s not my sleeve you need worry about.” He stops my hand from stroking his thigh and brings it to his lips, kissing my fingers.

I gasp at the intimacy. Despite myself, I want more of it. Our eyes connect, and a fire burns deep inside me.

This evening is going to be difficult. Playing the game convincingly, even harder.

I should have defied my mentor and stayed in bed with some cookies.

The guy is going all out to impress me.

Wowto the helicopter, goshto the weird feeling in my stomach, wowto the view, and the stretch limo waiting for us at the other end.

“How much further is it?” I ask as the car winds around a narrow, hilly road. It’s getting late, twilight descending, the last rays of sun disappearing from the sky.

“Approaching now.”

“Approaching what?”

“One of my homes.”
