She shrugged and sauntered away with both horses in tow.

Knox and I glanced at each other. Then, he smiled, something quite rare for Knox’s facial expressions. “It wouldn’t hurt to stay for a little while. I’ve been wanting to see one of the bands playing tonight.”

I managed to muster up a grin. I couldn’t leave Knox hanging. “Yeah, sounds like fun.”

Knox lowered his hat and started after Annabelle. “I’m going to help her load up and make sure she’s good. I’ll meet you at the beer tent.”

I nodded as he walked away. My grin fell as soon as he was out of sight. I gazed around, all the families and older folks had disappeared. Some bands had started playing and people had started dancing in the street with beers in hand.

This used to be the vibe that fueled me. And while I liked the excitement and buzz of parties, I wasn’t the same anymore. The prospect of partying until I dropped had lost its luster.

I started to make my way toward the large beer tent near the biggest stage. A band I didn’t know had begun to play, and they weren’t too bad. A cross between country music and rock. I figured this was the band Knox was interested in and it didn’t surprise me. I bobbed my head to the music, letting my muscles relax.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have some fun for one night.
