I shifted on my feet. “Do you want to go grab a beer or something at the grill? Maybe we can talk?”

He stuffed his hands in the pockets of his worn jeans. A rare grin tugged on his lip. “If you’re buying.”

Relief coaxed a genuine, easy smile out of me. “Of course.”

Knox turned, nodding his head toward my Jeep parked on the dirt path close by. “You’re driving.”

He started to walk away, and I followed him, clearing my throat. “Do you think…” I started, unsure why I was so nervous to ask. “Do you think Ellie might want to join us?”

Knox halted. He turned, his mouth a tight line. “You know I’m not hard to get along with.” He sighed. “But Ellie needs some space. She’s not going to be as forgiving as some of us.”

My heart dropped even though I’d expected it. “It’s bad, huh?”

He nodded once. “Ellie doesn’t trust easily and…she trusted you. I’d leave her be, for now.”

“Right, yeah.” I started back toward the Jeep, changing the subject as I went.

The truth was, I didn’t want to give her space. I’d just started talking to Knox again and already felt different. A bit like the old me. If I was going to commit to living in Cypress Falls again, I’d have to start repairing what I’d broken. Ellie was important to me. As much as I’d like to give her time, could time really make things better? Or reinforce the wedge between us?

As Knox and I drove to the grill, my thoughts were only on Ellie and making things right with her. I missed her. Even though I had no idea if our friendship was repairable, I had to try.

One way or another, Ellie Liles was going to be a part of my life. I just hoped it was as a friend and not an enemy.
