“Denier, knock it off.”

He pressed his forehead to hers, and his mother gasped again. “I made an appointment with the council. We can go immediately, and we will be seen within the hour.”

“So, what are the odds that this will work?” She was nervous. Walking into a room full of reapers was not something a sane person did.

“I am confident. No contract issued against a child is considered legitimate.” He wrapped his arm around her waist. “Mates of reapers are also exempt.”

“Den! You can’t be serious!” His mother barked.

“I definitely can. I am pulled to her, and she is pulled to me.”

His mother groaned. “Does she come from a good family, at least?”

“The best. She is Salat’s sister-in-law. More or less.”

His mother blinked. “Well, that’s something. Tell your father before you talk to the council.”

Denier swung Brit into his arms, and he looked at his mother. “I would rather it be a surprise.”

Brit gripped his shoulder and bit her lip. He rubbed his head against hers.

She stroked the thick column of his neck, and he growled in a way she was beginning to recognize.

He chuckled. “Let’s go.”

Brit didn’t have an option, but she pressed her face to his shoulder as he walked through the shadowed archway.

When the light appeared around them, she opened her eyes, and he set her on her feet, taking her hand in his.

“We are going to check-in, and then, we are going to wait.”

“Got it.”

He kissed the back of her hand with a flick of his tongue, and then, they walked through a hall with portraits of reapers doing what they did. Death for profit, but there had to be a purpose to it.

She looked at the ornate desk with the serious older woman sitting behind it.

She beamed when she saw Denier. “My boy. Why are you here? Who is your little friend?”

“I am here to challenge the contract on Bethany Wells, aged eleven.”

“You know that the target has to be here.”

Brit waved. “Hello. I was Bethany Wells.”

The woman looked at her, at Denier holding her hand and pulling her close, and she grinned. “Ah. I see the need for the challenge. Right. Ah, here it is. You are due in in five minutes. Please, have a seat.”

There were some chairs and a small couch nearby, so Denier sat and pulled her onto his lap, cuddling around her. He pried back her collar and nuzzled at her neck. He hit the spot beneath her ear, and a trickle of freesia emerged.

He paused and licked the spot just below her ear again.

She shivered, and the scent started to grow.

By the time the five minutes were up, she was shivering. Her skin felt like it was on fire. The thought of being back in her bed with his head between her thighs was her focus.

“They are ready for you now.”

Those words made Brit feel like locking onto Denier’s lap and staying there until they were satisfied. Instead, she got up, and he smugly took her hand.
