Chapter Two

Salat was doing one of those combat brother-type hugs, and they were laughing together.

Brit grabbed her vials and watched.

Khytten murmured, “Just wait for it.”

Salat looked at him innocently. “So, Denier, what brings you here?”

“You can’t guess? I followed a bunny who hopped through the forest.”

“No bunnies here. Just Khytten, the babies, her birth daughter, and her birth daughter’s mother and aunt.”

Brit kept her eyes forward and on her coffee while everyone was staring at the newcomer.

Lyric blinked. “Brit, you... ah... with that?”

“No. I paid for a healing. I just forgot to ask the rate first.” Her cheeks were pink, and her thighs clenched together. “I won’t make that mistake again.”

Khytten chuckled. “It just takes the once, and you are stuck.” She patted her belly. “This was my price, and when we were ready, I paid it. And then, the twit blissed me out, and now, there are three little folks waiting to see the world.”

“I am paid in full.”

Baola stared at him. “Is his activation a dog?”

Lyric murmured, “What do your senses tell you?”

“He’s a person who changed, like Salat or the doctor.” Baola beamed. “Or like Mr. Etgar. Does he have a tail?”

Brit swallowed. “I have no idea.”

Salat and Denier were close. Denier inclined his head toward Baola. “I do not have a tail, just really big ears.”

She looked at him and smiled. “Your eyes are pretty and gold. Auntie said they were red.”

“They change when I am hungry.”

“Oh, so you ate something?”

He glanced at Brit and then nodded again. “Yes.”

Brit went pinker.

She grabbed her cup and said, “I am going to get some more coffee.”

She headed for the kitchen, walking rapidly past Salat and his good buddy.

She got a cup of coffee and tried to loiter out of the way while the housekeeper continued making items for breakfast while the cleaning unit whirred away.

She jolted when Denier arrived in the kitchen. She edged around him and kept an eye on the exit when he said, “If you want your shoes, they are in my suit jacket.”

She paused. “What about my underwear?”

“Oh, that’s mine. It’s how I can track you, after all.”

Her coffee wobbled and splashed on her feet. “Clever.”

She sighed and returned to the kitchen, getting some towels and cleaning the coffee.
