Tigel got himself ready and caught the first baby as it emerged. A perfect, pink little girl.

Outside the room, Baola hooted. “I have a sister!”

Salat took the tiny, waving little girl as she purred her entry into the world.

Brit got up and put her hand on his shoulder. “Start wrapping her up, tie off the umbilical cord, and cut it, right here.”

A minute later and he had the wee one with him when he presented their daughter to Khytten.

She was crying and smiling, and everyone was happy when the next little one began to make its exit.

Little boy, then little girl, and their father held them all.

Brit was smiling, and the children were taken from Khytten while doctor Torene did the bulk of the healing for her. When the doctor finished her work with her palms on Khytten’s belly, she kissed her patient, and Khytten smiled.

All of the babies had had their first meal and were in little blankets made by Vallu.

Brit finished changing the sheets, and she helped Khytten back into bed. The pillows were propped up behind her back, and Tigel came back in and ran an ultrasound over her belly. “All is looking good, Khytten.”

She smiled and lay back. “Bring my family in. I want them all.”

Torene grinned and was going to leave, but Brit grabbed her and said, “You stay here, Doc. You are family.”

Khytten grinned. “Yeah.”

Brit came out and sent in Salat, the babies, Lyric, Baola, and the twins. “Go. She wants her family around her.”

When they were all in there, Brit exhaled and rubbed her lower back. Her dress was trashed. She would have to ask Lyric for something to wear.

She got a cup of coffee and walked outside to enjoy the dark sky and starlight.

Denier was sitting in a lounger, and he said, “That took a while.”

“That was short for that many babies.”

“You smell like blood.”

“Good. I am wearing it. Nice to know your reaper senses are keen.” She stumbled over to the table and sat there with her coffee held between her hands. She sipped at the coffee, and then, she bent her head to the table and rested.

She was dozing in and out of consciousness when there was a jacket tucked over her shoulders. She was suddenly warm, and there was no stopping her then. She was out.

She rubbed her eyes, and a warm cup of coffee was in front of her. Brit looked around and came face to face with Denier. “Oh. Geez.”

His expression took on amusement. “Are you registered with the BDC?”

“No. I had a tracker in my heel, so that was considered a little indiscrete. I went through my training and then had to bow out. I was a security risk.” She blinked.

“So, you are not registered with the BDC?”

“No. I have been a tagged shapeshifter of Capitol City.” She took the cup of coffee and sipped at it. She took two sips and then tilted her head back to empty the cup.

“Did you bring that?”

He inclined his head. “I did.”

“Thank you.” She sat up, and she was engulfed in his evening jacket. “Um.” She removed his jacket and handed it back to him. “Thanks for that as well.”

His eyes were still the soft gold that she had seen the previous day, so hunger wasn’t going to motivate him. “You are welcome. I will consider what the price of my generosity was.”
