Skye

Eighteen years old

The weekend at the cabin was where we went wrong.

So utterly, eternally wrong.

It changed—ruined—everything.

At the time, there was no knowing the tension brewing under the surface would have a tipping point. That something as innocent as partying my eighteenth year of life with my boys would rewrite the future.

All smiles, we had loaded up Hunter’s old blue pick-up truck to the brim with utter shit. I loved this truck and the memories we had made the last year Hunter had owned it. We had done so many road trips in it.

The guys had a giant box of alcohol they fitted in the back. When I noticed the contents, my mouth dropped open. Leo, seeing my look, chuckled, patting the box like it was a pet.

“When we said you were going to have an unforgettable birthday, sweetness, we meant every word of it,” he said, dropping down to kiss the side of my head.

Standing by, watching Hunter throw clothes and snacks into the truck, I had no idea where we were going. I didn’t know it would be to a cabin in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. All I knew was they were whisking me away for the long weekend, and it would just be us.

“I get to have you guys to myself?” I’d asked, hopeful.

Hunter smirked. “I got time off work.”

Thanking them profusely, I leaped into his arms, and he steadfastly picked me up, making me wrap my legs around his hips as Leo swatted my behind and said, “Anything for you, Skye.”

The drive was a couple hours long. We blasted music, munched on chips and chocolate, drank energy drinks and sang with the windows down.

I sat between the guys on the bench seat, in complete control of the radio. It was an old-school truck, nothing fancy like what Leo drove, so I couldn’t set up the Bluetooth and put on our tunes. Instead, I flipped through the radio, settling on country songs and classicals, trying to piss them off. Leo pushed against my side, reaching for the radio. I swatted his hand away, laughing hysterically before he dug those hands into my ribs, tickling me.

“I’m driving, assholes,” Hunter shouted, stifling a laugh. “Keep it down!”

Breathless from the tickles, I shuffled over and pressed against Hunter’s side. “I can drive, you know.”

His eyes didn’t leave the road as he said, “We want to survive the drive, don’t we?”

I gasped as Leo chuckled. “Asshole.”

Hunter grinned. “Am I? You wound me.”

“Aw,” I feigned pity, leaning in further to plant a kiss on his cheek. “Is that better?”

His smile weakened as he nodded. “More of that when you can, flower.”

I kissed his stubbled cheek again. “Like that?”

His grip on the steering wheel tightened. “Perfect.”

“I’ve got a booboo on my cheek, too,” Leo piped in.

Gasping dramatically, I shuffled over to Leo. He pointed to his cheek, and I settled a quick kiss there, too.

“Again,” he said, pretending to sound hurt.

I leaned in to kiss his cheek again when he whipped his face in time to catch my lips against his. His tender touch was sudden. I jolted back in surprise, my heart fluttering as he laughed.

“Smooth,” I said, smacking his shoulder before I resituated myself firmly between them. My heart was beating fast as I schooled my expression and flipped through more channels, voice a little breathless as Hunter pulled over into a gas station to fill up.
