Skye

We returned to the cabin, to the exact place I had been dumped on the grass, vomiting and frightened. I blinked at the scene before me, at the two bodies on the ground, unmoving. I saw a shape pacing back and forth. It stopped when we emerged from the trees, and then it raced to us. My body tightened in Hunter’s arms, which made his hold on me tighten too, as if he was protecting me.

“Is she okay?” Leo’s voice cut through the air, desperate.

Immediately my heart sped, and the tears fell harder. “Leo?”

He came right up to us, his hands touching me; one hand slid up my leg, the other was pushing the hair from my eyes. His face looked wretched, like he was hurting for me. “Sweetness, are you alright?”

“She’s in shock,” Hunter said. “She’s loosening up—”

“What happened?”

“I was tracking her, trying to find her, but the man got to her just before I did—”

“He went for her?” Leo’s voice boomed, his expression twisting to rage. “What the fuck did he do?”

“Calm down,” Hunter replied sternly. “I got to him, Leo.”

“But what did—"

“I got to him,” he repeated, cutting Leo off.

Leo didn’t respond for several moments, but his chest was heaving with emotion. His eyes were on mine, searching, like he was trying to see into me. “I want to hold her.”

For a split second, Hunter’s grip went impossibly tight.

Leo focused his gaze on Hunter, and his nose flared now as he demanded, “I want to hold her.”

Hunter’s body stiffened, but he relented and passed me over into Leo’s arms. Leo’s mouth descended on me, kissing along my face, his voice choked up as he asked me over and over again if I was alright, and I nodded every time.

I could hear Leo’s heart thudding in his chest, could hear his ragged breaths as he held me to him.

Meanwhile, Hunter walked around, standing over a body on the ground. “Why isn’t he moving?” he suddenly asked. “Leo?”

Leo looked up from me, his jaw tightening. “He bled out.”

“He wasalive, Leo—”

“He bled out.”

Hunter suddenly roared, punching his fist into the air. “We needed to ask him where he fucking came from, Leo—we needed to know why he was here, how he found us—”

Leo’s chest heaved up and down again as his voice darkened. “He bled out, Hunt. What do you want me to say? I’m glad for it—”

“We don’t know where he came from! We don’t know if there’s more—”

“We’ll figure it out.”

Now Hunter was pacing, his anger rolling off him in waves. “Is this from your end?” he demanded now. “Is your dad dealing with people who want to hurt him?”

“My dad doesn’t deal with the French,” Leo retorted, the veins on his neck protruding now as he roared over me, “But the bikers on your side do! Don’t they, Hunt?”

Now Hunter stopped and glared at him. “There’s no fucking way I would be in the centre of any mess, Leo. I’m just a prospect.”

“That’s a lie.” Leo scoffed. “That’s such a fucking lie, and you know it, Hunt. They took you in a lot longer than you’ve been letting on!”
