Leo didn’t argue. I’d never seen Hunter take charge like this before. Around Leo, he was usually reserved, relenting, allowing Leo to make the calls.

This was a different Hunter, I realized.

Leo carried me across the side yard and around to the front of the cabin. Hunter was ahead of us, already turning the truck on by the time we got to it. He opened the passenger door and Leo set me down on the bench seat. He detached from me, and sitting there alone, in the dark, frightened the shit out of me. I needed to be touched, at least by one of them. I couldn’t be alone like this.

Leo stepped away with Hunter, and I watched as they spoke privately. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but a lot of it was coming from Hunter and Leo was nodding. Then Leo strode to the cabin and disappeared inside as Hunter came to me, poking his head into the car.

“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice hardly above a whisper.

“We have to clean up the scene,” he answered, that voice strangely void of emotion now. It was like he had shut off. “You’re going to be back here—”

“I don’t want to be alone, Hunt—”

“Someone will always be around to make sure you’re okay. We need to do this, Skye. I need you to be strong.”

I forced my mouth shut but my lips trembled. I forced a nod. Hunter stared at me for a beat longer, his mouth turning down. Then he leaned in so his face was hovering inches from mine. “Take this, and if somehow something happens, you aim high and shoot. Got it?”

I looked down at what he was offering in his grip. He didn’t give me a chance to answer when he slipped the gun into my hands, his skin warm as he wrapped it around them both for a moment. He stared at me intently, waiting for me to look back at him to say, “You don’t even think—you shouldneverthink about this. You just shoot.”

Too gobsmacked to respond, I just stared at him, wide-eyed. Hunter stared at me, his gaze dropping to my mouth. A strange emotion washed over him, and it wasn’t filled with heat or passion or desire to touch me.

He lookedangryat me.

“Lock the doors,” he ordered, and then he shut the door and walked off.
