Icracked my eyes open to the sound of Leo’s voice. He must have just arrived because the front door closed and Shane exclaimed, “Where the hell have you been?”

I sat up, glancing at the alarm clock on his night side table. It was almost midnight. I’d slept the entire day away, and it felt like I’d blinked for a second.

Still groggy, I shuffled to the edge of the bed, straining to hear Leo’s response. “I hitchhiked back.”

What?

Shane cursed. “What do you mean you hitchhiked back?”

“Hunter and I got into it…”

“You got into it?”

“We had a scuffle—”

“Is that why you’re bleeding?”

“…Yeah.”

Shane’s voice rose. “He took off on you?”

My feet sank into the plush carpet, and I jolted for a moment from the pain. Dammit. I raised my feet, cursing under my breath. Instead of going to him, I held my breath, fighting to hear every word as they walked around the apartment.

“Yeah, he took off,” Leo replied. “I can’t say I didn’t deserve it—”

“That’s bullshit.”

“It is what it is.”

“What the hell happened?”

“The cabin’s up in flames.”

“And the bodies?”

“We got rid of them, Shane.”

“But—”

“I’m not getting into it. They’re gone for good. That’s all you need to know.”

I wrapped an arm around my stomach, feeling that horrible queasy feeling settle there. In the recesses of my mind, it troubled me how casual Leo sounded.

Shane let out a sigh. “So what do we do now?”

Leo’s voice lowered when he responded. “We figure out who sent them.”

“The bikers—”

“Hunter is denying any responsibility—”

“Hunter has been molded into that cult,” Shane cut in sharply. “They have crafted the perfect killer in that man.”

Leo was quiet for a few moments before he quietly said, “He fought like it was nothing, Shane. Like those guns pointed at us werenothing. He looked death in the eye and he…he wasn’t afraid.” The incredulity dripped from his voice as he added, “It’s hard to feel like the man I thought I was.”
