This was real.

They had killed people—people who had hoped to try and takeme.

Leo barely ate, and he wouldn’t leave my side, either. He sat next to me, his back against the headboard. We said nothing for what felt likehours.

Then he quietly said, “You have to stay here, Skye. I can’t let you leave.” He paused abruptly, choosing his words carefully before he added, “I need to know you’re safe.”

At this, I turned my head to look at him. His blue eyes softened as they looked into my own. He was concerned, maybe even scared. He dropped his head down at my level, his forehead close to bumping mine, but he stopped himself, like he was afraid to bridge the connection.

My heart stuttered at the sight of his hesitancy. I whispered, “I’ll stay until it’s safe.”

He looked relieved, and I wanted to ask him, what did you think I might do?Had he expected me to leave? What sort of fool would after what happened? No, I was fine to stay right here in his apartment.

The days flew by in a blur, and I remained bound in Leo’s apartment, healing from the mild injuries on my feet. It didn’t help Leo acted like they were worse than they were. He didn’t leave my side for a week straight. It was an odd week, too, filled with tension and long stretches of silence.

Sometimes Leo would come close enough to touch me, but he never did. He waited for my move, but I couldn’t do it knowing Hunter hadn’t returned to us. I needed to know he was okay, that we were all okay.

In the depths of me, I knew I was being naïve.

We weren’t going to come back from this, were we?
