Stopping meant he might feel the wave of shame pass over him—and he feared that emotion strongly.

But all good things come to an end.

He pulled out, stepped back, and raised his face up to the ceiling, shutting his eyes as that dreaded emotion ravaged him.

Shame.

Disgust.

So much of it.

He sensed she turned to him, but he couldn’t look at her. He ran his hands into his hair, shaking his head. He sounded tortured. “What the fuck are we doing, Skye?”

Skye’s arms came around him. She hugged him tightly, breathing shakily against him. “It’s okay, Leo. We’ll figure this out.”

He wrapped his arms around her, too, but his flight response had kicked in, and he felt like running. He could not upset her, so he kissed her forehead, her hair, pulled back to kiss her hands and then opened his eyes to peer at her. “I need a minute, sweetness.”

She stared back at him, her eyes sad and glassy. She managed a nod, and then he was helping her to the bathroom. He put her clothing in the laundry hamper and watched her get under the hot spray to clean herself ofthem.

Then he fled with a destination in mind.
