Not about this.

It was the three or them or nothing. Isn’t that what Skye said often?

“I’ll fix this,” he promised Hunter then. “I’ll take care of my mother. I’ll…figure out what to do. I would never use you—would never betray you like that.”

Hunter didn’t answer, but his expression softened.

They stood for several minutes, absorbing their words. Leo’s mind ached with ways to handle his mother. Would he approach her? Would he threaten her that he knew about her attempts? Or would he stay quiet and give her the illusion that Skye somehow got away?

He wasn’t sure.

But he’d fix this. Somehow.

He glanced at the doors, tempted to check on her, to be there while she slept—

“How’d you find out what happened, Hunt?” he wondered suddenly.

Hunter didn’t skip a beat. “You already know.”

Yeah, he already knew.

He let out a shaky breath, and suddenly everything hurt. “One day, Hunt…we’re not going to be on the same side, are we?”

“No,” Hunter replied. “We aren’t.” He edged closer to Leo, whispering, “But for now, it’s us and her, and we treasure these moments. We treasure this peace.”

Leo finally looked back at him, his heart crashing hard against his chest. He wanted to cry. Wanted to grab Hunter and tug him to him, hold him to him—

And he did just that.

The illusion was a lie he was willing to swallow, for the truth would drown them all.
