Chapter 8

Sophia

I tossed and turned all night barely getting a moment of sleep, my mind wouldn’t turn off and it was all because of Zack Von. It shouldn’t be like this. I shouldn’t be this obsessed after all this time. We should have slid into a normal teacher and student routine by now and I had thought that we had – until last night.

Maybe I’d been fooling myself. If anything, the past couple of months seemed to solidify the bond we were both trying to convince ourselves didn’t exist.

Throwing the blankets from my body, I slid out of bed and took a quick, cold shower hoping to wake myself up while hoping the shower wouldn’t wake Tabitha. At least it was the weekend and I didn’t have classes today or I’d have been a walking zombie. Toweling myself off, I got dressed in the bathroom and then went back into the bedroom where my roommate was still loudly snoring. She’d come home shortly after I had, stumbling into the room and knocking over the lamp next to her bed before falling almost immediately into a deep sleep. Had I been sleeping, I’d have been pissed.

I was tempted to make a ruckus – payback was a bitch. But I didn’t, I couldn’t be that cruel. I’d give her a little leeway and blame it on the alcohol.

Sitting on my bed, I grabbed my phone and turned it on. To my surprise, there was a message from Zack. I’d turned my phone off not wanting any alerts to disturb me while I was fruitlessly attempting to sleep.

My breath held as I opened up the message.

Zack: Did you get in fine?

Releasing my breath, I smiled my finger hovering over the keys not sure how to respond. Then an idea came to me. It was reckless and crazy, but the truth was I wanted to see him even if common sense dictated that I stay far away.

Rushing back into the bathroom, I took ten minutes to apply a light coat of makeup to cover up the darkness under my eyes. Once satisfied that I didn’t look completely heinous, I threw on a jacket, grabbed my purse and rushed from the room ordering an Uber as I made my way downstairs. Just as I exited the building, the car pulled up to the curb of the building.

Perfect.

We were halfway there when I realized that I couldn’t arrive empty-handed. I needed an excuse beyond wanting to see him.

Leaning over the seat I tapped the cabbing on the shoulder. “Excuse me, but could we make a small stop at the nearest restaurant so I can grab breakfast to go. I’ll pay whatever you want.”

He looked at me in the rearview mirror. “There’s a diner just down the street from your destination, I can drop you there instead?”

Smiling, I nodded. “That would be perfect. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, ma’am.”

A few minutes passed and we rolled up to a smaller diner. When I looked down the street, I could see Zack’s building. “Thank you.”

Hopping out, I made my way into the diner which was much busier than I’d expected. It was only seven in the morning for crying out loud. What crazy people got up this early on purpose on a weekend? This was a college town, maybe they just hadn’t gotten home yet.

The middle-aged, dark-haired waitress greeted me as I entered grabbing a menu from the hostess stand. “Just one?”

“Ahh. No.” I crinkled my nose up at her, “Don’t suppose I could get two breakfast plates to go?”

“Sure, you can sweetheart.” She passed me the menu and pointed to a bench just to the right of me. “Check out what we have and then let me know.”

“Actually, can I just get a bacon and eggs and…” I shrugged. “Whatever else comes with it. Two of them.”

She took the menu back. “How about a homestyle breakfast? Bacon, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, and toast.”

“That sounds great.”

“White toast?”

I nodded. “And can you put lots of different jams and peanut butter in there as well?”

“No problem at all sweetheart.”

After paying, I took a seat on the benches and waited. Pulling my phone from my purse I was tempted to call or text him to let him know I was coming. For all I knew he wasn’t even home. But what if I did and he told me not to come? I didn’t want to take the chance. It was much harder to reject me when I was standing in the lobby of his building.

As I sat pondering, staring at the screen of the phone, the restaurant got my order ready and the waitress was passing it to me before I had a chance to decide either way. Unless I wanted the food to get cold, the decision was made for me. I’d just go with my first thought and surprise him. He wouldn’t be able to turn down a girl with food, what man could resist that?
