“Maman has been working with me.” The voice was muffled as the unknown opponent reached up to tear off the helm.

Rich, red hair spilled in a wave about the narrow shoulders. Bright gold eyes glimmered with the remnants of humor. On Rook’s left, Hahn froze on the press, legs extended. To his right, Kjar gasped. “The fuck?”

Rook admitted to being shocked as well. He hadn’t expected a woman.

As if suddenly realizing they weren’t alone, Kyele and the woman turned in their direction. The tips of her lips curved up and she propped one hand on her hip. “Hey.”

The earlier amusement and affection on Kyele’s face vanished. His customary glower appeared as he stepped forward and a little to the side, partially blocking their view of the woman. His green eyes dared any of them to make a wrong move.

Rook tensed and held still. Only Kjar, the bold fuck, spoke. “Who’s the newbie, Kyele?”

If possible, the frown on their leader’s face darkened. “It doesn’t matter since she’s leaving now.”

The woman rolled her eyes and moved around Kyele. He held up an arm to block her, but she ducked beneath it with a snicker and shoved at him lightly. Kyele shifted his heated stare in her direction. The woman didn’t notice. She eyed Kjar, interest present in her amber gold depths. “I’m Jaycie. You must be the guys from Ghost Unit.”

“Jaycie, you know you aren’t supposed to speak to them,” Kyele snarled.

One of the benefits of their Unit lay in the secrecy surrounding their identities. The lack of bonds or connections to anyone made them invulnerable to outside manipulation. With no family to call their own, they belonged completely to the Alliance which protected worlds beyond the planet, Enotia, their home base.

Despite the order, Kyele didn’t stop Jaycie as she continued forward and held a hand out to Kjar. “Nice to meet you.”

After a confused hesitation, Kjar shook her hand in return. Everyone was familiar with the Earth style greeting which had become popular long before Rook had been born. Females from that planet had integrated with dozens of worlds, bringing their alien customs to the new homes they settled on.

“I’m Kjar.”

Dorian completed his floor workout and stood. He crossed the room, shook Jaycie’s hand in his large grip but didn’t speak.

Slower to respond, Hahn rose from the leg press machine and approached, arm extended. “Hahn. Good to meet you, Jaycie.”

Her smile widened. She tipped her head at her hand which Hahn still held and continued to pump. “It’s done, I think.”

Shades of red filled the bastard’s cheeks. He dropped her hand and dragged his fingers through his hair. “Apologies.”

“Don’t worry.” Her gaze moved to Rook.

He slowed the treadmill and stepped off lightly. Foregoing the handshake, he inclined his head. “Rook.”

Unlike the others, he sensed the building tension in their Unit leader and didn’t want to risk losing a limb for touching the woman. She didn’t let his reserved manner intimidate her. “Hunter One, I presume.”

Rook nodded. As Team Leader that was his designation.

“I’ve heard things about you. I’d love to spar with you one day,” she added.

Hahn groaned and muttered under his breath. “Every time.”

Rook paid him no mind. There was a consensus among his teammates that women fell at his feet due to his physical appearance. It wasn’t like his looks were something he worked at. Just a gift of his genetics, though they’d come in handy a time or two.

Jaycie’s offer seemed to come from a place of fighter interest not sexual. Kyele wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her in close. “That’s not going to happen.”

Confusion filled Rook. He knew Kyele had a red-haired Earth woman as his Chosen. He couldn’t recall her name but he was sure Jaycie was a bit young to be that woman. She looked more his age then his Unit Leader’s

“Is Jaycie joining our team, Kyele?” Kjar asked, his eyes eating the woman up. His long white hair strained against the braided ties he used to contain it.

Kjar loved the ladies. All shapes and sizes and they loved him in return. It was one of the things Rook didn’t understand because his teammate had the personality of a solid wall.

“No.”

That was it. The single word from Kyele didn’t invite further conversation.
