“She’ll make it easy for us,” Rook found himself saying, drawing Kyele’s glare next.
“No. She’ll make it harder for us. Jarad is currently under protective custody until we handle this problem. We need to take out Tempest in order for ERS to release him. Jarad has to be seen conducting business as usual to allay suspicion that he’s turning evidence. The longer he’s out of play, the more the risk to his role being discovered.”
Sounded like a win/win to Rook. Either this Tempest ended the guy or his associates took him out for betraying them.
“Are we being assigned to protect Jarad?” Rook asked.
He hated the idea of it but would follow orders. He always followed orders and didn’t want to do anything that would put his place on the team in jeopardy. Bastien’s call had given him a new life and a chance to achieve the dream he’d had when he entered the Jutak academy. He wouldn’t throw that away.
Kyele’s lips firmed into a straight line. Whatever thoughts were on his mind weighed heavily. “Our job is to find Tempest and bring her in for questioning to see who she’s working for and if anyone in the drug families under investigation suspect Jarad.”
“And if she resists?” Hahn asked. “I can’t imagine she’s open to coming with us to keep her from taking down Jarad. According to the holo, she’s got seven kills in the last two years. That’s not someone chasing a guy who sold her bad drugs. That’s someone with vengeance on their mind.”
Brash, bold and occasionally oblivious summed up his fellow soldier, yet Hahn’s ability to align pieces together was without equal and showed why he’d been added to the team.
Dorian grunted in agreement from his seat and Kjar nodded. “Hahn’s right. We’re going in against someone who’s proven she’ll eliminate any who stand in her way.”
The corner of Kyele’s mouth tipped up, putting his scar in stark relief. “If she resists, respond accordingly. Our goal is eliminating the threat to Jarad Oolun despite his history. We must think of the larger value his information will give ERS and thus the Alliance in striking a blow against the drug trade.”
