“I ripped my mother apart making my way into the word. One and only time I’ve ever shifted. The medics tried to save her but the damage was too great and everything happened quickly. She didn’t seek medical care until the last minute and paid for it.”

“Roarke, that’s awful. Did she—”

“Die?” he filled in. “Yes. She told the medics to tell me she had no regrets and loved me. Those were her last words. He was kind enough to document it in the records. I was sent to a birth registry but no one claimed me.

“In an effort to provide me with family, I was sent to Argoran in hopes someone would come forward and take me.”

“Did they?” She held her breath for his answer.

“Surprisingly my genetic sample revealed a name for my father’s mother. She took me in. Every day I lived there, I wished she hadn’t.”

She couldn’t begin to comprehend. She was alone in the world but she’d had loving parents. Family and support from other Allagi before the accident. “And your father?”

Roarke laughed. Not out of humor. His gaze darkened as if the memories were too painful to recall. “He died. Never knew I ended up on his planet and with his mother. Argoran are supposed to be nurturers. Animal instinct and all.

“But his mother was ashamed of my mixed heritage. Her son was half-Argoran, a youthful mistake she claimed. And here I was. Less Argoran blood than that and she considered me an abomination.”

She propped her chin on his chest and said fiercely, “Her loss. She didn’t deserve to breathe your air.”
