He and Kjar would go through the front. Rook faced him and signaled. A single click of agreement sounded in his comm. They moved forward in stealth mode, crouched low.

They were within feet of the door when the attack happened. The window on the first floor of the building exploded. Behind Rook, the pfitz pfitz of lasers sounded. Fragments of the wall where he stood flew about his face.

“Shots fired. Hunter One taking cover.” He dropped to the ground and crawled forward, intent on getting inside and saving the hostages.

“Hunter Three on the move. Inside.”

“Hunter Four inside.”

Kjar balanced on one knee, his hair rising in the air as he provided cover fire in the direction of their attackers. Pounding steps raced in their direction. Rook spun around and took out the one assailant charging toward them.

“One target down,” Rook reported as he leaped to his feet and went to join Kjar. Back on his feet, the other man swiped at the dancing strands of hair teasing his temples and grinned. Together they raced for the house.

“Second target down,” Dorian said across the comms. “Hahn has the two hostages secure.”

That left one target on the loose.

“Behind you, Hunter One.”

Hahn’s shout sent Rook diving to the side. A blast struck the ground where he’d stood. Kjar lay on his back, arms spread and his white hair rippling on the ground about his head.

“Hunter Two is down, I repeat Hunter Two is down,” Rook snarled, getting ready to charge for Kjar.
