Kjar drew up to them and eyed Rook. Concern darkened his gray eyes. “Everything alright?”

Before Rook could blow off the question, Dorian walked up. “What’s going on?”

“Just making sure Rook doesn’t have a problem with the mission after what went down with the target, Tempest,” Hahn informed him in his typical blunt way of speaking.

Rook flushed, the heated wave flowing from his cheeks to his neck. Moving forward, he headed down the hall again. The others stayed on his heels. “Nothing went down.”

“You sure?” Hahn pushed, keeping pace with him. “We...we all heard what she said that night. She tugged at my sympathies too and I wasn’t in the room. You’d have to be truly cold-hearted to not be moved.”

He knew what Hahn referenced. The secrets Tempest shared in those brief moments. His own background had come out in that conversation too. Rook eyed Hahn with a narrow-eyed stare. “If you think I’m going to talk about my past, forget it.”

Grimacing, Hahn rubbed a finger against the side of his nose. “Not asking for you to share. Just saying I understand and if...uh...you ever doubt yourself, don’t. You followed orders. We have to believe in what we do to go out time and again. It’s the only way to sleep at night.”

Rook’s heart thudded madly. He didn’t expect the blatant show of support. After those surprising words, Hahn patted Rook on the back. Kjar parted his lips to speak and Rook snarled, “Don’t even think about it.”

The other man smirked but squeezed Rook’s shoulder as he walked by. He had a feeling the incident during the training session had changed the dynamic in their relationship. Whether it was a permanent or temporary change was in the air.

Dorian nodded, a show of respect Rook also appreciated. Though he’d shut down the conversation, it meant a lot to know he had his team’s silent support.
