Kyele met his stare and propped his hands on the table as he leaned forward. “Umir was questioned extensively and has no idea who Tempest is. We’re sure this is a separate incident but she’s still wanted by the Alliance.

“Tempest may not have had anything to do with killing Quai but we’re certain she’s responsible for the others. Also, there’s no intel stating she’s given up on Jarad. Which brings me to my next point.”

Activating the holo at the center of the table, Kyele pointed at the digital diagram. “ERS is releasing Jarad tonight. It’s imperative he been seen and moving about, conducting business as usual in light of this recent incident.”

“Are we going to hunt down Tempest then?” Hahn asked without a single glance in Rook’s direction.

Rook’s hands clenched in his lap beneath the table.

“No.” Kyele grimaced. “We’ve received special orders that we’re assigned to Jarad.”

Kjar frowned and shifted in his seat. His hair twitched within the single braid he’d used to restrain it. “Assigned to him how?”

“As his protective detail for an upcoming event in a week.”

Kyele’s answer caused a split second of silence before Kjar cursed. Dorian blew out a breath and slumped back in his seat. Rook gritted his teeth and didn’t say anything.

“That’s a waste of our skills! Whose special order is this?”

The dark look Kyele shot Kjar spoke volumes. “It came from Torkel Alonson.”

Rook glanced around at the others. Alonson rarely interfered in their missions. They knew Kyele received cases from him but any involvement of Ghost Unit was subject to Kyele’s decision. For the Jutak Commander to step in signaled the importance of this.

Hahn slumped back in his seat, a look of defeat crossing his face. “Relegated to bodyguards.”

“What exactly are the parameters of this assignment?” Kjar pressed.

“We’re to cover him through his public engagement at which point if Tempest makes another attempt, we have a go for a kill order.”

Rook’s claws shot out. Fury pierced his gut fast and fierce. He clamped down hard on his jaw to lock in the growls rumbling in his chest. Kyele turned a narrow-eyed stare in his direction. “Will that be a problem? For anyone?”

Every muscle in his body locked tight but he forced himself to meet his Unit Leader’s gaze and lie with a straight face. “No.”

Not one to take anything at face value, Kyele arched a brow, his mouth twisted to the side. “The protective detail nor the Tempest situation?”

“None of it’s a problem,” Rook snarled.

Kyele stared a moment longer. Pressure built in Rook’s chest. His other teammates watched in tense silence. Finally, Kyele looked away and muttered, “Good.”
