Months. Months had gone by since he last touched her. Months since they’d last spoken because of the nonstop missions he’d been unable to avoid. Duty warred with the ever growing need to be with Seraphina. Now, he finally had her.

He eased back, hands clasped at her hips and said the words he’d practiced over and over so he would get them right. “I love you.”

She tipped her head back and kissed his jaw. Her whisper at his ear came next. “Love you back.”

Rook knew how hard that had to be for her. On one of their comms, she’d mentioned her overwhelming fear of losing those she loved. She admitted not wanting to let anyone close and how she’d been adamant about being alone over the last five years.

It was why he’d decided to share his feelings first and expose his vulnerability to her. He wrapped an arm around her waist. “Let’s get out of here.”

Grinning, she leaned into his side and they left the dazzling ball behind them. The hovercar idled outside. The back door opened and Kjar leaned out with a huge ass smile. His loosened hair flapped about his face and he shoved it back to yell, “Get in.”

Seated by him inside the vehicle, Seraphina glanced from him to Dorian and Kjar. “Your team, I take it?”

He nodded. “Meet Dorian and Kjar. Hahn’s driving.”

“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”

His heart tripped in his chest as she leaned into him again. He wanted her next to him for the next forty years or longer. “Enotia.”

“Are you a Jutak warrior?” she asked, peering back to see his face.

For the first time, he didn’t feel the dark stab of regret at his answer. “No. Something more. Different.”

“This might help,” Dorian said from his seat across from them and handed her a comm. “Someone wants to talk with you.”

Seraphina slipped thepiece in her ear. As soon as it connected a voice spoke. “Seraphina Gordei. I have an offer I think you might be interested in. Ghost Unit could someone of your talents.”

She glanced at Rook but he leaned back in his seat and kept his arm around her shoulders with a smug smile. Happiness did a dance in her chest. She responded to the voice she recognized. “I’m listening, Leader One.”
