“I’ll get him back, Coco. He’ll pay for this.”

If it was the last thing she did, the Antare would pay.

Exhaling a heavy sigh, Coco shook her head back and forth. Her mouth moved but she ended up coughing. Blood trickled down her chin. Seraphina wanted to scream, to rage but none of that would do Coco any good. All she could do was hold her friend’s hand.

After she caught her breath, Coco clenched her hand tight. “You need to leave. Get away from here. He shouldn’t have tagged you. This is bigger, Fina.”

What?“Bigger? What do you mean?”

“I think...maybe. This might be my fault.”

Denial rose immediately. “You arenotresponsible for my mistake. I did this. I messed up.”

Sadness tugged at the corners of Coco’s mouth. “It felt like a set up. Your gut was right. We should have left as soon as you said you felt off.”

Seraphina studied Coco’s wane expression. “Don’t think about it. Think of the beach. We’ll go to the beach and you’ll be fine.”

Coco’s green eyes grew dim. “Have to go to the beach without me, Thriller. Listen to the ocean. Smile for me.”

“I will,” Seraphina promised.

Coco shifted her gaze to the ceiling. “I shouldn’t have stolen from him. He’s to blame.”

“What?” Seraphina leaned down. She could barely hear her friend now.

“Shouldn’t have stolen from...” Coco released her last breath on a soft exhale, her hand fell slack in Seraphina’s grip.

“Coco? Coco, no. Please don’t leave me,” Seraphina cried.

Nothing. Coco Vindori, friend, sister and defender of the weak was gone.

Seraphina sat by her side and cried. Cried as night turned to morning and Coco’s body became cold. She forced her stiff knees to work and stood. With credits from their stash, Seraphina paid one of the beggers to see to Coco’s final rest. She chose a place that had an artificially created lake so Coco could always be near the water.

As Seraphina took a shuttle transport from Gloucene, she considered her future. What would she do? Where would she go?

She thought of Kai and anger drew her chest tight. It hadn’t been necessary to shoot at them. She hadn’t had a chance to steal his money. The Antare did this and it didn’t matter how long it took, Seraphina would end him as he callously as he’d ended her friend’s life.
