Taking a moment, I glance down at her as she peers up at me over her thick lashes.

“Thank you for the dress. It’s…em, it’s beautiful.”

Wrapping my arms around her waist, I settle my hand on the curve of her back. “Only on you.”

Raising her hand to my eye, she traces over the cut Liam left on my brow. “This is healing well.”

Emotion at her small, delicate touch forms in the back of my throat, but I gulp it back, and cover her hand with mine, intertwining our fingers. A new song begins, and I step forward, guiding her back. Our eyes never leave each other as the singer lilts out “Taibhsí no Laochra” by The Coronas.

We exchange no words, solely feeding off the magnitude of the moment. Some looks can kill, but in her eyes, she holds a far greater power, the power to bring this king to his knees.

She doesn’t know it yet, but every move I’ve made has been to protect her. Sure, at first she was a job, a means to get everything I’ve ever wanted. But now, she’s an obsession, an itch beneath my rib cage I can’t reach.

As the song slows, my eyes veer over her shoulder, catching sight of Liam, Donnacha, and my dad. They’re looking this way, focusing on every moment Saoirse and I share. Hardening my features, I loosen my hold on Saoirse. A king never shows weakness, and as much as I try to hide it, I know the girl in my arms is mine. Lowering my head, I bring my lips to her ear. “Only love a king when he deserves it. That’s when he’ll need it most.”

With that, I step back and turn on my heel, leaving her standing in the middle of the ballroom floor.
