“Please, mo bhanríon. Look at me.” The emotion behind those few words cracks my eyes open.

“I’m going to take you somewhere, okay? Somewhere you’ll be safe.”

I nod, the words I want to say lodging in my throat. “Good girl.” He leans forward, dropping a chaste kiss on my forehead. Rising to his feet, he turns to face Aodhán.

“What do you need, mate?”

Interlocking his fingers, Rohan raises his hands to the back of his head before his shoulders drop. “Find Lorcan and get that piece of shit off the balcony before anyone else finds his unconscious arse. But whatever you do, do not kill him. When he dies, my face will be the last face he ever sees.”

Aodhán nods in understanding. “You got it.”

After exchanging some sort of man-shake, Aodhán peers around Rohan. “Don’t worry, Saoirse. You’re in good hands.” For the first time since arriving here, I believe those words. Rohan is not my villain.

Before I can muster up the strength to reply, Rohan shuts the door. My eyes stay trained on him as he talks to Aodhán, then he rounds the front of the car, and climbs into the driver’s seat.

Reaching over, he tugs on my seatbelt, strapping me in.

“Where…where are you taking me?”

“Home.”

“Rohan. I don’t want to go back to the Devereuxs.”

His eyes glance my way. “I am taking you home, Saoirse. Not to the Devereuxs, and not to my house. Your home, Saoirse. I’m bringing you home.”

I lose his meaning to my wandering thoughts, but I’m trusting him to keep me safe as he promised. “Rohan?”

“Yes, love?”

Dampening my dry throat with a swallow, I rest my head against the headrest and close my eyes. “Thank you…for saving me.”

“I’m not the only one doing the saving, mo bhanríon.”
