Chapter 30

He arrived at his cabin. Fed Monica and her duck. Running inside, Nash grabbed a bottle of water to ease his thirst before heading to the Lodge. It was then he saw the note on his kitchen counter.

Nash,

I’m sorry for what happened to your horse because of those photos. And really sorry for the inconvenience me being me has caused your family.

What the hell did that mean? Me being me? Did she think who she was made her something less than awesome? That was his fault. He’d made her feel that way.

I’m sorry that our lives are so different and that it’s a bridge too far for us to cross, or even meet in the middle.

Thank you for seeing me for who I am. And thank you for protecting me, but I can see now it’s time to go back to Chicago.

Be happy, Nash. And know that I’ll never forget my time here in Ryker Falls with you and the people who opened their arms to me.

Luna xx

“Well, hell.”

His phone rang. Pulling it out of his pocket, he answered. “What?”

“Your girl is leaving town.”

“I know that, Luke.”

“But what you don’t know is that the road is closed so she can’t leave. I just talked to Ted, who told me she and Hugo checked out. Get your sorry ass into town if you want her in your life, bud. If not, then all good.”

“Where is she?”

“Tea Total at the moment. But Mrs. L has a sweater picked out for Hugo, so I’m picking they’ll be there next.”

“Can I get in?”

“Not if you’re driving.”

“Thanks.” Nash hung up and headed back out the door.

Monica kicked the gate.

“You behave. I’ll be back soon.”

He drove into town. Finding a place to park wasn’t easy, but he managed to pull up onto the grass verge. Getting out, he made for the main street behind all the other people heading that way.

It was crazy packed on the main street, and a stage had been set up with a long table. Seated at it were Joe Trainer, Mr. Goldhirsh, Albert from the chocolate place, and on the end sat his girl.

“That’s for the muffin baking comp.” Jack Trainer appeared holding the hand of Joe and Bailey’s son, whose name escaped him. “That shithead brother of mine gets to judge because he’s on the town council.”

“Shithead,” his nephew said. He then took a lick of his ice cream.

“We’ve talked about this.” Jack bent so his face was level with the boy. “You get ice cream and don’t repeat Uncle Jack’s naughty words.”

“’Kay.” The boy smiled up at his uncle, mouth covered in ice cream.

“Why is she up there?” Nash nodded to Luna.

Seeing her calmed the crazy inside him. She’d not left, couldn’t because the street was closed. This town, Nash thought. Maybe he’d come to love it now?

“Apparently Nancy pulled a muscle last night. Bob and she are very energetic.”
