“Carob is my guess,” Luna pretended to cough and spat the bite she’d just taken into her hand. She then threw it behind her hoping no one stood there.

“I don’t mind carob, but not in this muffin,” Joe shuddered.

“My vote is for this one,” Luna whispered. “It has pineapple, coconut, and that creamy icing,” she pointed to muffin in question.

“Agree,” Joe whispered. “Nash is looking at you.”

“He’s looking at all of us.”

“No, just you, and he looks like he wants to take you home and slather you in the same icing that’s on the winning muffin.”

“Joe!” She checked to make sure no one had heard that comment, but the other judges were still eating. “I can’t believe you said that.”

His smile was wicked. “You should let him. He’s a good guy.”

“He’s not my guy,” she whispered back. “We live different lives in different cities.”

But she’d already made the decision to move out of Chicago. Luna wanted a simpler life. She also wanted to work with flowers. How that happened, she still had no idea.

Looking down the street she thought about the florist. She loved that shop.

“He should be your guy. You make him smile and appear more human.”

“No. He could never handle my life.”

“If this is about the crap that happened at the SRR today, forget it. You get assholes in all walks of life. Plus, I heard his mom loved all the notoriety.”

“His horse was injured.”

“But it’s going to be fine. Rory spoke to the vet who treated it.”

At least she could feel better about that.

“Give him a chance, Luna. You guys are good together.”

“You cannot know that.”

“I’m intuitive, ask my wife.” He smirked at her.

“Is that what they’re calling it now?” Luna said writing the winning entry on her piece of paper.

Mayor Gripper and Mrs. Howard counted the votes. Then the mayor tapped the microphone making everyone wince.

“The winner is, Malory!”

Mal, who was standing beside Maggs, whooped, and then hugged everyone close, including Nash.

She’d miss those arms. When he held Luna, she’d felt all of him wrapped around her. It made her feel warm and protected.Loved.

“I won, Luna!”

“I know, your muffin was the best.” She got out of her seat and hugged the girl. She then turned back to Joe.

“Bye, Joe.”

“Where are you going? The celebrations are just starting?”

She didn’t answer him, just jumped down the back of the stage, and moved into the crowd. No way did she want to come face to face with Nash. Maybe he hadn’t read her note, but maybe he had. She didn’t want him telling her to stay when she knew the right decision was to go. What happened with his family, could happen again. He wasn’t a man who could live with that.
