“As I’m the only one living here, I like it that way,” Nash grunted. “I’ll get my pickup and drop you home.”

“Untidy house, untidy mind, I’ve heard,” Luna said.

If he heard, he didn’t say anything; he just disappeared after picking up his keys.

“That man is hiding,” Mr. Goldhirsh said, looking around the room. “No one is born like that.”

“Rude and grumpy, do you mean?” Luna said.

“Exactly. His sister and brother are different, I’m sure he was at some stage too. We are usually shaped by events from our past, Luna.”

She thought about that as she looked around the small room. Two big comfortable chairs, a coffee table, and a large TV on the wall. She saw a small kitchen off this room. Shelves held books and a photo of his family. Moving closer, she saw Nash was smiling. Was Mr. Goldhirsh right, had something in his past made him the grumpy man he was today? The titles on the bookshelf surprised her. Some were on classical music, others philosophy, and then a few on organic farming.

“A complex group of reading material,” Mr. Goldhirsh said. “You never know what’s beneath the surface of a person.”

The sound of an engine had them straightening. Nash then appeared again and picked up Miss Sarah. He then walked outside without a word. They followed.

“I’ll call round later, Sarah,” Mr. Goldhirsh said as Nash buckled her in.

“Lovely, and I will be fine but doubt I’ll be running for a while.” She looked disappointed about that. “Thank you, Luna, I enjoyed our run very much. I’m sure I’ll see you in Tea Total soon for a scone, if that horrid man doesn’t take all our business!”

“Of course I will, and thanks for the run.”

Luna ignored the scowling man getting in the driver’s seat. The pickup then fired to life, and in seconds they were gone.

“I do wish the sisters would be more open about Albert starting his chocolate shop,” Mr. Goldhirsh said as he started running. “But time will sort that, I’m sure. Now, Luna, I have some ideas for Move with L.K.”

She fell in beside him as they ran down the driveway and listened to his ideas, which in fact were really good. The muscles in her legs protested, but she kept running and thinking about Nash Winter. What events in his life shaped him? Had he suffered? She didn’t like to think of anyone suffering, even GHG.

The pace wasn’t any easier than when she’d started her run, and she was extremely happy when they reached the main street of Ryker Falls and stopped outside Phil’s cafe.

“Right, after that eventful morning, it’s time for coffee,” Mr. Goldhirsh said.

Why not? Luna thought. She rarely did anything unplanned, and this morning had not gone exactly to schedule. Why not add coffee with a man she barely knew to that. Of course, she’d have to find a way to draw oxygen into her lungs first.

“I’ll just take this, Mr. Goldhirsh,” Luna said as her phone rang. “I’ll meet you inside.”

“What time will I pick you up?” Charlie said after she’d answered it.

Luna took a deep breath.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Luna bent at the waist with the phone still pressed to her ear. “Mr. Goldhirsh.”

“Did you let him trick you into going for a gentle run?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Outside Phil’s.”

“Say no more. I’ll see you there soon. And Luna, go and sit down before you fall.”

“Excellent advice,” she wheezed, straightening. Her eyes found the banner that hadn’t been there last night.Blindfold dating. It’s all about the scent.

“It’s best not to ask,” a woman said from beside her. Luna recognized her as someone she met last night in Tea Total.
