“Hospital, Luke,” she said.

Luna lay against him pale and shaking. Her face was turned into his shoulder, and Nash battled the rage that was boiling inside him. What the hell had happened?

“It must have been those women from earlier,” Charlie said. She held Luna’s hand in hers.

“I only saw one person but couldn’t tell if it was a man or a woman.”

“It has to be connected to that bitch.”

“Charlie, leave it.” Luna’s words were muffled as they were spoken into his shirt.

“But isn’t that the problem? Don’t you always just leave it when she strikes at you, Luna? Always the good girl. Always the peacemaker. It’s not working. Tonight showed you that, surely.” Charlie’s words were fired out in an angry volley.

Luna didn’t speak, but he felt her sigh.

The hospital wasn’t far, as nothing was in Ryker Falls. Nash got out with Luna still in his arms and walked into the emergency department. She was lowered onto a bed and taken away, which left him feeling helpless. His chest felt tight, and his insides ached. He stood with his eyes on the door she’d left through, fists clenched, for the first time in his life clueless as to what he should do next.

Dylan arrived and took his sister to sit in the waiting room. Nash didn’t have the right to sit with them. He didn’t want that right, he told himself.

“I’ll head off now. You call if you need anything,” he said, making his feet walk to where they stood.

“Thank you, Nash, for finding her.” Charlie got to her feet and hugged him hard. “She could have been lying there still if you hadn’t.”

“She would have woken.” He patted her shoulder until she released him. Then he nodded to Dylan and walked out of the ER.

He saw Luke and Jack Trainer outside talking, but they didn’t see him, so he kept walking back into town. Once there, he climbed into his pickup and drove to the Lodge. Ted was standing behind reception.

“Can I ask a favor, Ted?” He hated asking favors of anyone, but this was something he needed to do, and he didn’t want to wait until tomorrow. For some reason, he wanted this information now.

“Sure.”

“Can I use a computer?”

“Of course. Follow me.”

They walked, and Nash admired the Lodge all over again.

“This place is nice,” he said.

“Thanks. People seem to like it.”

“Ted, Luna was injured tonight. Someone attacked her as she walked to her car. I found her unconscious.” He’d said it because tomorrow it would be all over town, and Ted would wonder why Nash hadn’t told him.

“Is she okay?”

“She woke up and is at the hospital now.”

“Nasty shit, what happened out on the street. You think this is related?”

“No idea, but seems likely.”

“Okay, I’ll call the hospital and see if she or her car needs picking up.

“Thanks.”

“I know what it’s like to live in the spotlight, because my father was a senator. It’s hard and can be nasty. I’d guess Luna has that and more because of what she is and does.”

“Yeah, can’t imagine it’s easy.”
