“I like flower arranging.”

He exhaled when she ran with the conversation change.

“How come you know this stuff?” He pointed to the flowers.

“My family used to grow them. We had a shop on the property that sold bouquets and other things.”

He saw something pass across her face.

“You miss them, your family?”

“Sure, but I’ve been gone a long time now. Nash.”

“Luna—”

“Don’t lick my hand again.”

“Sorry, I just like chocolate. Add that I like you, and it’s a hard combination to resist.”

“We can’t—”

“I know.”

Sally aka Goth Girl came in looking harassed.

“Thanks.” She hurried behind the counter. “Wow, that looks amazing. Are you sure you don’t want to buy the shop?”

Nash saw Luna’s hesitation, and then she shook her head. “I can’t, but thanks.”

He walked out the door behind her.

“So, thanks for rescuing me the other night again, Nash, and for the coffee and—”

“The best make-out session of your life,” Nash said.

She exhaled loudly. “That.” Luna raised a hand and walked left. He went right.

Getting in his pickup before anyone else tried to communicate, he headed home. Once there, he let Monica and her duck out and started work on the house. He’d just climbed the ladder when Ford pulled up.

“It’s like this place has an open-door policy, which I assure you it doesn’t,” he called down.

“I’m here to help you today.”

“Why? It’s your day off.”

“Did you get an official invite to Joe Trainer’s birthday?” His brother squinted up at him.

“I did.”

“You’re going?”

“Why do I have to go?” Nash asked.

“I’m socializing you. Hey, Monica.” Ford scratched behind the pony’s ears. “Hey there, Cheese.”

“What did you just call Monica’s duck?”

“Cheese, as in Cheese and Quackers. I think it’s going to win the poll.”
