Page 13 of A Day of Ruin

I followed Skylar and the team out of the conference room, my head spinning with the new information that was fed to me. The whole situation had put me in a tail spin.

The team laughed and talked like a little clique, and I felt like I was back in high school all over again. They were starting renovations next week to redesign the pig pen so that the teams were more centralised together. At least for now I would remain in my spot.

As I reached my computer, I groaned as I sat down, putting my head in my hands as I let the news sink in a bit more.

I wasn’t happy with this unexpected turn of events but once again, I needed the money. Dex wouldn’t be happy if I couldn’t pay my rent and the last thing I needed was another reason for Lauren to come after me.

Resigning myself to get back to the task at hand, I let out a breath before straightening up so I could get back into my giant bundle of paperwork. I frowned as I looked at my email screen.

My computer was unlocked. Unless I had subconsciously unlocked it when I sat down but I’m sure I hadn’t. And I always locked it when I wasn’t at my desk. They drilled that into us for privacy reasons.

Shaking my head, I ignored the niggly feeling in my veins. I was being paranoid. I must have unlocked it. There’s just no way he could have done it. I was being stupid.

I could feel eyes burning into me and I looked around, finding Bryson nearby at his desk. He threw me a small, sympathetic smile which I politely returned, his pity not needed.

It wasn’t a shock that I didn’t get the promotion. I had given up on that dream 6 months ago. It was just a drop in the ocean of things I had lost and my goals and dreams had changed so much that I no longer strived towards career excellence.

A win or goal for me now was just getting to the next day without ending up dead.
