‘Why?’ Abigail blurted.

‘He wanted you to be there. I don’t know you, but my father did. And although it sounds as though you didn’t know each other long, he said there was a connection …’

Abigail caught the inflection in her voice as if she was asking a question:what was that connection?

Abigail swallowed as she reached for the envelope. She opened it and saw Sidney’s full name printed on a card inviting her to attend. She felt a tear rolling down her cheek and thoughtwhy can I cry for someone I barely knew, and yet I still haven’t shed a tear for Toby?

‘Will you come? I think it would have meant a lot to him.’

Abigail looked at the date. It was the next day.

‘It would mean a lot to us, too. Any friend of my father’s is a friend of mine.’

Abigail sighed. How could she not? Sidney had been her guardian angel that day. Or was it Ulysses? Abigail smiled. Either way, he’d been there at the right place at the right time and saved her from doing something incredibly stupid. She wished someone had been on that bridge on a different day and saved Toby, but she didn’t want to think about that. She focused on Sidney instead. She wished she’d spoken to him again, but at least she could be there to say goodbye. ‘Of course I’ll be there.’

‘That’s good because he’s left you something in his will.’
