‘I’ll be popping back to the lighthouse every day. My uncle isn’t well. I’m keeping an eye on him, making sure he eats properly and gets out and about.’

Lil frowned. It sounded as though that was what Abigail needed too.

‘I’ll still keep an eye out for your friend.’

Lili thanked him, although she couldn’t see what he could do. She didn’t even know him.

‘It’s weird, though.’

‘What is?’

‘There was some strange white light in the room which I couldn’t put my finger on, not bright white, and it flickered in and out, like it was casting some sort of shadow around the room.’

Lili was watching cars leaving their parking spaces, some with their lights on even though it was only dusk, their headlamps flashing past her eyes as they drove by. ‘The projector!’ Lili exclaimed.

‘What was that?’ Joss asked.

‘Never mind. Look, thank you so much for calling me.’

‘That’s not a problem, Lili. I’m concerned about your friend.’

‘Me too.’ Lili knew what Abigail had been doing during the week. She wished she’d never brought those bloody reels and that stupid projector. ‘I’m coming straight over.’

Joss went quiet. ‘It’s hard when you lose people. I don’t think he’ll ever get over losing—’

Lili heard his uncle shouting something in the background, interrupting Joss. Lili raised her eyebrows. So, his uncle was grieving, too.

‘I’m on the phone!’ Joss shouted out.

Lili momentarily held the phone away from her ear.

‘Look, I’d better go,’ he said. ‘You’ve got my number. If you need anything, just phone me.’

‘Thanks, Joss.’

Lili ended the call. She glanced at the shopping bag and quickly made another call before she set off. ‘Oh, William, sweetheart, I need to speak to Daddy.’ Predictably, before he called his dad, William asked her whether she would be home soon. He wanted to tell her all about his day at school. It was Grandma Sarah’s school pick-up that day, which would give Ray time to shop and prepare for the next evening’s meal – although it would most likely turn out to be in a restaurant.

Thinking of evening meals, Lili told Nate she had to see Abigail and would probably spend the evening with her. Their Friday night date night around a movie was cancelled.
