They fell silent. ‘So, will you take me?’

‘You’ll be wasting your time.’

‘We’ll see.’

‘And you won’t be able to go in the house. We have Portaloos so we don’t go in.’

Abigail’s face fell.

‘Oh.’

‘Yes – oh.’

Lili took a breath. She had to say it. ‘Talking of visiting houses, have you visited the guesthouse?’

Abigail sighed. ‘I’m starting to wish I never showed you Toby’s home movie. You’ll be on at me about everything, I just know it.’

Lili grinned. ‘You can just put it down to me being your interfering friend, who means well.’ She raised her eyebrows. ‘Well – have you?’

‘You know I haven’t. Mobile reception is crap.’

Lili reached over and picked up the receiver of the old-fashioned green phone. It looked very retro, but was in fact quite new, and unlike the computer, worked perfectly. ‘Here, I have a landline.’

Abigail rolled her eyes and reluctantly took the phone.

‘If you need a lift over there, I’m free this afternoon.’ Lili walked towards the stairs and glanced at Abigail, who was dialling her mother’s number.
