Carys had also made the effort to get to know a little bit about the people who worked there, rather than just knowing their names. It meant she could have a friendly chat if she bumped into them, ask about their families, to show that she cared – which she did. Nobody else was going to do it, not her brother or her father. Her brother was preparing to step into his father’s shoes and becoming the next Lord Somerville. In more ways than one,Carys thought, reflecting on his aloof, unapproachable manner.

Such a manner might have worked in her father’s and grandfather’s days, but times had changed. Carys was the friendly, approachable face of the Somervilles, and she wanted the people who worked at the Hall to feel like part of a big extended family rather than just staff. She frowned. Unfortunately, changing her father’s and brother’s attitudes wasn’t easy. She knew she had an uphill battle on her hands.

Carys had it on the tip of her tongue to say,you should make the effort to know every employee who works here. She followed his gaze, staring at the young woman walking with Joss in the grounds. It was lunchtime, so she guessed Joss was on his break.

Carys said, ‘I have no idea who she is, though.’ She couldn’t imagine the woman was another new starter, like Joss, otherwise she would have known. Carys knew that Joss was a member of Lili’s staff, but she hadn’t met him yet and introduced herself. She always made a point of doing that, which reminded her she must catch up with him and say hello, and welcome him to Somerville Hall on behalf of the family. Carys’s attention turned back to the pretty young woman. ‘Perhaps she’s his girlfriend, meeting him for lunch.’

Ollie frowned. ‘People can’t just wander in here off the streets. This is private property, you know.’

Carys rolled her eyes. It was just the response she expected. ‘Yes, but the people who work for us have personal lives, and they work here.’

‘So?’

‘So, it doesn’t hurt if a relative or friend pops along in their lunch break.’

She could tell by the look on his face that he felt otherwise.

‘You don’t think she works here, then?’

‘Not as far as I’m aware.’

Ollie was still standing at the window. ‘I recognise her from somewhere.’

‘Well, I’m sure I can shed some light on who she is when I see Joss this afternoon.’ Like Ollie, Carys was protective of the Hall and her family. She decided that if the young woman was working at Somerville Hall, she would make it her mission to find out who she was.
