‘Really?’ The look on Carys’s face said that this was news to her.

Abigail nodded.

‘I remember it used to be like that years ago. I had no idea that still went on.’

‘Perhaps it’s because they park their cars around the back.’

Carys frowned. ‘Perhaps. I haven’t been back here that long, so I wouldn’t know. But I will ask my brother. They shouldn’t have to slink in the back as though we are ashamed of them.’

Abigail agreed. She liked where Carys was coming from; she had no airs and graces whatsoever. And she looked at those employed here not as servants but as fellow human beings.

As they walked down the grand staircase, Carys glanced over her shoulder at Abigail. ‘I suppose the housekeeper told you why I’ve returned home?’

Abigail avoided her gaze.

‘It’s no secret, so I don’t mind if she has.’

‘She said you’re divorced.’

‘That’s right. Should have left him years ago, but I hung in there expecting things to change, and they never did.’ She arrived at the bottom of the stairs and looked about her, as if seeing the grand entrance hall for the very first time. ‘A lot like this place. Things don’t change.’ She turned to look at Abigail. ‘I think it’s time they did – don’t you?’
