AXEL ALVARES

Axel was already reroutingthe firetruck he’d commandeered when his cell phone rang. He’d heard multiple explosions coming from the south side of the Quadrant. The earth had shaken beneath their feet—all around the city. After Daisy’s call, he’d tried to stay focused, tried to keep his mind on the civilians he helped rescue. But as the beast of a vehicle bumped over debris in the road caused by powered replicates, he knew the situation was more dire than Daisy had let on.

More than any of them had let on.

The closer he got to ground zero, the more damage and dead bodies he found. Some of the wounded were innocent people. It took everything he had to keep going after Daisy. Something in his heart said not to stop, for anything.

Some people jumped out from hiding spaces to flag him down, but with guilt wrenching his gut tight, he planted his foot on the gas and hurtled down the street to where a big dust cloud bloomed. Syndicate Tower.

His cell rang again. He hit the call button, swerving to narrowly miss an upside down vehicle.

“Alvares,” he clipped.

“Daisy’s gone dark,” the deep voice clipped—Parker?

Axel’s heart stopped. Spots swam over his vision. He shook his head and then beeped the truck horn at people in his way.

“What do you need me to do?” he asked tightly.

“I’m sending you GPS coordinates via text.”

“Got it.” He cut the call, then said aloud to give him courage. “I’m coming, Daze. Everything’s going to be fine.”

He hoped.
