“That you found me, or something.” Her tone softened.

He growled, “I said I was never letting you go.”

Their eyes clashed. Hers watered, then she bit her lip and answered, “I’d like that, Axel. I’m so glad you came back for me.”

“Always.” He claimed her lips again. Kissed her deeply. “Glad we got that cleared up.”

He pushed onto the bed and flattened himself over her. She didn’t complain. Their make-out session continued and he thought, he could die happy like this. Didn’t care about anything but her lips. Things were getting hot and heavy when AIMI’s voice came over the ceiling speaker.

“Mr. Axel Alvares, you asked me to warn you when someone was approaching,”she said.

He scrunched up his face and forced his heart rate to calm, forced his hormones to slow down. He took a breath before answering. Daisy’s hands made their way down his torso and dug into his jeans.

“Who is it?” he gasped to the air.

A pause, then AIMI’s answer: “Evan and Tony Lazarus are in the living room speaking with your sister.”

“Thanks, AIMI,” he said. “You’re a doll.”

He could have sworn he heard a digital giggle before she replied, “Stop it, you’re making me blush.”

“No, you stop it.” He grinned. “Thanks, AIMI.”

Daisy’s fingers paused on his belt. She raised her brow at him. “Did you just flirt with a computer?”

“She started it,” he replied, then elaborated. “While I was waiting for you to wake up, we started chatting.”

Her brows lifted higher.

“Shut up,” he frowned and then shrugged. “I have this effect on women. I can’t help it. You should see the receptionist at the station.”

She chuckled as he slid off the bed and onto the more appropriate chair, then she said under her breath, “She better know who the girlfriend is in this relationship, or I’ll have to have words.”

Next he looked at her, the humor was gone.

“You okay?” he asked, concerned at her sudden change in temperament.

“I don’t know if everyone will feel the same way as you about Mary’s and Flint’s sacrifice.”

“You’re here,” he replied. “You’re safe and I’m not going anywhere.”

The door opened. Evan and Tony pushed their muscular bodies through. Like Axel, they’d both showered and patched up their injuries. Evan had a bandage on his tattooed neck. Tony limped but otherwise looked unharmed. Their eyes went immediately to their sister and softened with relief.

“I had a feeling you’d be awake,” Evan said.

She tensed and squeezed Axel’s hand painfully hard.

“I’m sorry,” she blurted to them. “I couldn’t stop them.”

Both brothers shared a glance before Evan said, “We know. Raven filled us in, and—” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Even though some of us are pissed at the Sinners for what they kept from us, we can’t argue with the fact that this was Mary’s and Flint’s choice.”

“So… you’re not angry at me?”

Tony scowled and folded his arms. “Why the fuck would we be angry at you for saving the world?”

“Because I could have saved them too.”

Silence descended, and then Evan said, “You need to come down to the shared apartment. There’s something we need to do. As a family.”
