“Is she going to be okay?”

“I don’t know,” he confessed. “She has moments when she jokes.” Axel smiled to himself at the memory of them sleeping. “In those moments, I see a whole new person who is so magnificent that I feel like I’m bathing in sunshine. And then…” He frowned, looking at his fingers both soot-covered and bloody. Must have been from Daisy’s face. “Then the darkness takes over, there is hate in her eyes, and everything is cold. But the worst… the worst I see is when there’s nothing.”

Mary made a strangled laugh and covered her mouth.

He glowered. What was so funny?

“I’m sorry.” She smiled with unbound joy laced with tears. “You said she joked with you. She smiled.” Mary exhaled slowly, forcing herself to gather her tumultuous emotions. She nodded. “She’s coming back to us.”

“Mary,” he warned. “I just told you she’s empty half the time.”

She gripped his arm and looked him in the eyes. “My dear boy. She used to be empty all the time. There is hope yet. And you’re giving it to her. We must have faith that she will find the rest of her way home.”

With a huff of satisfaction, Mary straightened her shoulders and beckoned him into the hallway. When they arrived at a door, she stopped him with a palm to his chest.

“You can go in and see your sister, but then I want you to return to Daisy.”

He raised his brow.

“And before you complain that I’m telling you what to do, get used to it. You’re part of the family now, Axel. Trust me when I give you direction.”

He stared at her palm on him and sensed that if he tried to remove it, he would lose his hand. This deadly woman had Daisy’s best interests at heart. But did she have his… or Elena’s?

“Mary,” he cautioned, slow and steady so she picked up his vibe. “As much as I’m falling for Daisy, there is no one in this world I care for more than my sister. No one.”

Mary assessed him from top to toe. She stepped back, her hand dragging off his pec. Her chin lifted in respect.

“Elena is ours too, now. Anything she needs, we will supply it. Including our love.”

A lump formed in Axel’s throat, and he coughed to cover it. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Yes. I’ll see my sister and then I’ll check on Daisy.”

Mary entered the apartment on silent feet. Axel tried his best to emulate her, but she was a goddamned ninja as she moved. If she wanted him dead, he wouldn’t hear her coming. But as he followed her through the dark apartment, he realized he was behind her. This assassin of epic proportions was giving him her back, as she had done since he’d arrived that morning.

She meant what she promised.

She trusted him. And if she trusted him, then he should trust her.

“In here.” Mary opened a door a few inches.

Inside, the only light came from the predawn hues coming through the window. On a bed, wrapped in cozy blankets and surrounded with pillows, Elena slept soundly. She looked good. Peaceful. He frowned down at Mary.

“Did she talk to you about her illness?”

“Only that its terminal. The doctors don’t have a cure.” She paused. “And that the same illness took your parents.”

“Was she okay?” No sickness. Nothing to worry about?

“She took her medication on time. She ate a full meal.”

Axel exhaled. “Good. Thank you.”

Mary closed the door and looked at him expectantly.

He nodded. “Take me to Daisy.”
