AXEL ALVARES

Axel tuggedDaisy back into the shower with him thinking back to when she’d fallen asleep. She’d emitted that sexy, sweet smell of hers and he’d gone hard and stayed hard. He’d tried to ignore his need—for hours—and then he couldn’t take it anymore. He’d decided to sort himself out.

Never had he dreamed Daisy would wake and demand to be the one to finish him.

Never had he imagined she’d like it hard and fast.

Never had he thought he’d like it too.

But now… now, as he enveloped Daisy in his arms, now it was time to go slow. To relish her while he could because she still held a distance in her eyes, and he wanted it gone. He wanted nothing between them. He wanted up close and in-your-face personal.

So he gently put her under the shower spray and watched her silver hair plaster down her pale body. He took the shampoo from the caddy and squirted some in his hands.

“What are you doing?” Her delicate brows puckered.

Fucking adorable. How she could go from vixen-on-fire to sweet-and-innocent blew his mind.

“What do you think?” He chuckled.

“Oh.”

Like this, when he surprised her with his attentiveness, she was so innocent despite her age. A broken birdy. All he wanted to do was take care of her. He tried to make a mental note, that if she acted all tough, to remember these moments. To remember she was still someone fragile inside before he caved to her whims like he’d done when she refused to tell him what bothered her.

He cleared his throat. “Turn around and face the wall.”

She did. He lathered her hair slowly, taking his time to massage her scalp and then down the length of her hair. When he was younger, and his mother was sick, he’d had to wash her hair while she laid in bed. He’d used a pan and a jug. Then she lost her hair, just like Elena was losing hers. Maybe, one day, the illness would come for him. To dispel the memories, Axel massaged down Daisy’s scalp to her neck, digging in all the soft spots he knew would feel good.

Her groan of appreciation traveled down his spine and stirred his cock. Ready again. Fuck. He didn’t think this was ever going to change. He’d always react like this around Daisy.

“Feel good?” he murmured.

“Mm-hm.” She rested back against his pec.

The position gave him the perfect view down her sudsy front, including the firm breasts and erect nipples. He swept her skin. Slipped his fingers through the suds, traced around her feminine shape, washing where he’d released, enjoying her melt for him.

“Thank you for letting Elena and me stay in your home.” He moved them under the stream, so the shampoo washed from her hair. “I feel better knowing she’s safe.”

Daisy turned and looked up at him. She blinked through the water. “It’s not really my home. Not yet. Not like it was with…” She suddenly frowned and finished her sentence softly. “Not like where I used to live with Julius, I suppose. But then again, that wasn’t really my home either—”

She cut off suddenly and started.

“What is it?” He tensed and brushed his thumb over her cheek.

“I… there was something one of the Faithful said on the train. He said Julius called him from a landline phone connection. At the time I thought it was useless information but…” Violet eyes met his. “What if it’s from my old childhood home?”

“It could be any landline, though. Right?”

“Yes, but Julius had always kept his old home. No one else knew it existed, but me. I lived there when I was younger, but he hated me touching his wife’s and daughter’s things.” She scowled. “I hated that too. They were dead. Long and buried, yet he kept his daughter’s room exactly as it was the day she’d died. He once caught me sneaking in there and playing with her dolls. Wasn’t long after that he started locking me in an attic fitted out with a toilet. That would be the perfect place to keep a group of people.”

A prickling sensation came over Axel. “Where is the house?”

“Just outside city limits.”

“But the bridges…”

“If we head down to the slums, the gap between the mainland is small. We can take a boat across the river. Or we might be able to find a helicopter.” She turned the faucet off. “We’ll go now.”
