The smile on her lips stuttered. This felt too good to be true. They both looked over at the reunited couple. Griffin pulled away from Lilo as she said something. He placed his palm on her swollen belly. They faced Daisy. Griffin’s expression dropped. They locked eyes. And then he charged toward Daisy.

She tensed.

Oh, fuck.

He came at her like a bull, and she prepared for the horns, but he took her shoulders and slammed her to his front. Griffin, the baby brother she hardly knew, hugged her like she was a lifeline.

“Thank you,” he choked out through sobs. “Thank you for bringing them back to me.”

Them. Meaning mother and unborn child.

Daisy blinked rapidly. She caught Parker’s gaze from their side. Nothing but relief shone back at her. It came from all of them and especially Lilo. Astounded eyes watched on as the man who hated to touch choked back tears and heaved breaths while he squeezed Daisy in his arms.

The fire of acceptance started slow. From the base of her feet to the center of her warming heart until the kindling of familial love erupted. Like an explosion, Daisy’s arms wrapped around him. She hugged back.

Eventually Griffin pulled back. Red rimmed eyes crinkled at her. He grabbed her at the base of her skull and held his forehead to hers. Just a small moment. A touch. A thank you and a goodbye.

A reminder that she was on the outside looking in no more.

She was one of them.

Connected.

But as they walked away, as Daisy and Parker followed them all out of the basement, she couldn’t help thinking all this happiness was from a stroke of luck. Luck that she’d gone to her childhood home on instinct. Luck that Julius wasn’t there. Luck that she’d been able to access her gift and control it enough to make a difference.

One thing worried her the more she thought about it. If Julius had left them at the house, set a trap for them, then where was he?

They might have escaped this trap, but there would be more. And the next one, they might not have luck on their side. So, she’d better start making some of her own.
