The haunted look he gave didn’t bring her confidence. When Elena eventually succumbed to her disease, it could be Axel’s unravelling. So long as Elena was alive, he had the strength to be the beacon of hope that had triggered their mating bond. The hope that Daisy needed.

As he fell asleep in her arms, she stared at the ceiling and wondered. She imagined the future. If they did get rid of Julius, what would life be like for them afterward? Would Axel just be a hollow shell, having served his purpose of triggering her gifts and being her mate? Daisy had been removed from her family, and the despair of it had broken her. She’d been turned into a killer. A monster. A villain, susceptible to the manipulations and machinations of a megalomaniac. Would Daisy be enough for Axel?

Was that even fair?

Or would he end up resenting her and leaving her. And she’d be in the same position she was in when Mary closed that fateful elevator door, shutting Daisy out, leaving her to burn in a building. Alone.

These were stupid, irrational fears that were hard to put to bed, no matter what logic told Daisy about her situation now. Because the simple dark truth of it was, the future would always be uncertain.

The only solid answer was the pain circling her heart like a prowling wolf every time she thought of Axel losing his last family member to an illness he couldn’t control.

But maybe she could.
