“If they’re in trouble, Wyatt should go down,” Misha said, eyes wide.

“He’s about done,” Grace blurted. “I’ll go and take his line out.”

She jogged down the hallway and returned a few minutes later with a grumpy looking Wyatt. He was already in his battle suit, ready to go. He checked to see that his mate and daughter were safe, then strode over and kissed them both on the head before saying, “I’ll go sort this shit out.”

“Be careful,” Misha blurted.

He gave her a wry smile and it was the only time Axel had seen that wickedly mischievous glint in his eyes.

Misha smirked back. “I know… you’re invulnerable. I’m still allowed to worry.”

“As long as you’re both safe, I’ll be fine.” He turned to Axel. “Take care of them. I could be out there for a while. Days, even. Keep us updated on Daisy’s condition.”

Axel gave a curt nod and watched Wyatt leave. A strange squirming sensation entered his gut. Long after the door had closed, he realized it was pride. Wyatt trusted him to look after the most precious people in the world to him—his only weaknesses.

But Axel was a fireman. He should be out there, like them. He needed to help or the guilt would weigh him down.

Elena knew exactly what he was thinking and raised her brow at him.

“Maybe you should go too, Axel.”

“Daisy needs me.”

“We got her.”

“But what if she reacts badly to the—”

“She won’t.”

“No.” He dug his heels in. Wyatt would kill him if something happened to his family. All of them would. And the last time he’d taken his eyes off Daisy, she’d gone and donated almost every blood cell in her body to his sister. If she’d told him her plan, he was sure they could have found a smarter way to do what she did. They could have done it the right way.

The way that didn’t risk her life.

He nodded at the table. “Go eat with the others, Ellie.”

She cast a worried glance down the hallway.

“I’ll let you know how she is,” he said. “Don’t worry.”
