“Get them out of here,” Parker bellowed, pointing to the new arrivals. “The last thing we need is for cops to get injured.”

Or their identities exposed. Liza jumped up, nodded, then jogged to the police.

Her feet dragged. Tired. They all were, Daisy realized. Her family was running out of juice. She slid her gaze to Syndicate Tower, her old home. So many memories tried to push in. None of them good except the night Axel had shared with her.

The fight was out here because Julius was in there.

Someone grabbed Daisy’s arm. She whipped around to see a Sinner. Not Alice. The other redhead.

She pulled down her red mask to reveal a pretty face.

“You,” she panted. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

“What?”

“Raven foresaw it had to be you to stop Julius from opening the hell gate.”

“I just want to stop him.”

“Whatever you believe, it’s you.”

“Mercy!” Another Sinner tossed a dagger at them.

It whizzed by their heads and embedded in the chest of a Faithful running closer. Two more emerged from behind as the first fell to the floor. Daisy’s hand whipped out, intending to use her telekinesis, but a flush of fire laced with lightning shot from her hand. The stream hit the Faithful on the left in the chest, both igniting him on the outside and electrifying his insides. He was dead before he landed. His corpse sizzled. His white Halloween mask had melted to his face.

The third Faithful stopped suddenly, staring at the fate of his companion, then backed up and ran for his life.

Mercy gaped, “What the fuck was that?”

From around the street, Daisy felt the eyes of her siblings on her.

Parker shouted out, “You’ve taken on our traits through the blood exchange.”

His words snapped Mercy into action. She gripped Daisy by the scruff and snarled in her face, shocking with her vehemence, “You’re the only one who can stop him.”

As if to punctuate her claim, the ground shook beneath their feet, setting off car and building alarms in the vicinity.

“That’s him,” Mercy blurted, her eyes wide. “You need to go now.”

She shoved Daisy toward the building. Daisy jogged as her mind caught up. The earthquake was caused by whatever Julius was doing in the basement. And that extra energy Daisy had felt, it wasn’t just some kind of advanced healing. It was each of her siblings’ gifts simmering inside her, blending with hers. But for how long? At what cost?

Maybe Mercy was right. Maybe this was Daisy’s fate.

It started with her; it would end with her.

She turned to Parker as she arrived at the Tower double glass doors, tapped her hood and activated the microphone to broadcast her next words, “Pigeon, I’m going after Julius. Don’t wait up.”
