I was sure Noah would be furious, too. First, I’d have to tell him just who the mystery woman he’d slept with was, and then I’d tell him that his daughter knew she was going to have a sibling.

It was too much to process so soon after learning I was pregnant.

“Well?” she asked, letting go of my arm. “Who was he?”

“He was…some doctor. A tall, handsome doctor.”

She grinned. “You hooked up with some hot doctor at the ball? God, how did you not tell me this?”

“He was older too.”

That really got her attention. “You’re kidding. How much older?”

“Old enough that he had silver in his hair.”

Cammy grinned. “This is amazing.” Then her face fell. “Wait, you don’t know his name, right?”

I shook my head. “Nope. We were about to tell one another who we were, but decided it’d be more fun to keep it a secret.”

“Hm. That’s bad.”

“What? Why?”

“Because you’re going to want to find out who this guy is now, right?”

“Why would I want to do that?”

The question was silly – obviously, there was a clear reason why I’d want to know the identity of the father. Really, I was buying time, trying to dance around the issue.

The more we talked about it, the more I realized how freaking awkward it was to discuss me having sex with her dad.

“Uh, so you don’t have to raise him or her on your own?” she answered sarcastically.

I shrugged. “Maybe that’s what I want to do. There’s no reason I can’t do the single mom thing, work, and raise the baby. I’m sure I could handle it.”

“And I’m sure you could, too. But being a single parent is hard. Believe me, looking back on what I put my dad through…it’s crazy that he managed to raise me all on his own without needing a mental institution.”

Just the mention of Noah was enough to make me uneasy. I wanted more than anything to change the subject, to get the focus off of him, even if we weren’t talking about him directly.

“Anyway,” she went on. “I’m sure you could find out who he was. You’d have to get the guest list, and then go down the names of all the men to see which one was a doctor, and…” She sighed, shaking her head. “I just remembered that it was a Pitt Medical thing – that means half the people there were doctors. God, this is going to be impossible.”

She thought it over, her eyes lighting up. “Wait, my dad was there! Maybe we could ask him, to see if he spotted a gorgeous blonde girl speaking with a handsome, older man. It’s a long shot, but it might be worth it.”

My stomach turned at the mere mention of talking to her father about it. I felt like I might pass out.

“You OK?” she asked.

I shook my head. “Just…still trying to process all of this.”

Her eyes flashed with worry. “Oh my God, I’m being such an asshole. You just found out, like, an hour ago that you’re pregnant and I’m here playing detective. Come here.”

She opened her arms, inviting me in for a hug. It was something that I realized I needed badly.

“You’re going to be a mom!” she said, giving me a hard squeeze before letting go. “This is amazing! And I’ve got no doubt you’re going to be freaking awesome at it. And it goes without saying that I’m here for you, whatever you need.”

“I know. Thanks so much, Cam.”

She smiled warmly. “Of course, Sade.”

It was true – I had total confidence that she’d be there for me.

But that only made it harder to know that it was all based on a total lie, one that she’d kill me over if she ever found out the truth.
