It was hard not to feel better with his comforting voice speaking those words. All the same, I was nervous. Tears formed in my eyes, and I quickly wiped them away.

“Yeah. I understand.”

“Good.”

A beat of silence passed.

“Uh, guys?”

Cammy’s voice snapped us both to attention. I turned and so did Noah. Cammy was standing at the top of the stares, a confused expression on her face. Thankfully, Noah took his hands off my shoulders in a smooth, relaxed way – not drawing attention to the compromising situation we were in.

“Everything…cool?”

Noah nodded. “Just walking Sadie through some new-mom jitters,” he said.

It was a good save, one that was easy to go along with.

“Yeah,” I said. “Sorry – hormones or something.”

Cammy smiled slightly in a way that made it hard to tell if she believed us, or if she was wondering what the hell was going on.

“Oh, OK,” she said. “Well, we’re waiting on you guys to start down there.”

“Don’t wait on us,” Noah said. “I’m going to be just a couple more moments.” His tone was stern, and Cammy nodded obediently.

“Sure. Sorry if I walked in on anything.”

Without another word, she turned and headed down the stairs.
