Chapter 27

SADIE

Marta was all smiles on my Zoom call.

“Seriously, they wereblown away,” she said, shaking her head as if she were in a state of shock. “They said you knew that place up and down.”

She was referring to the showing I’d done on a condo downtown, this massive pad that had about the best damn view of the city I’d ever seen in my life. It was my first week of really getting back into the swing of things at work, and Marta had decided it would be a good idea to have me do a couple of showings to see how comfortable I felt with coming back to work in a more in-person sense.

“Thanks. Seriously. That’s really nice of you to say.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Come on, Sadie – you think I’d be saying this to make you feel better?”

I laughed. “OK. No, you wouldn’t. All the same, with a place like that you could’ve pulled someone off the street and let them do the showing and they would’ve impressed whoever was looking at it.”

“You’re selling yourself short. I don’t think someone off the street would’ve convinced the people to whom you showed the place to make a bid twenty percent over the asking price.”

At first, I wasn’t sure I’d heard her right.

“What?”

My phone buzzed on the desk announcing a call. I quickly reached over to stop it.

Marta smiled. “They called me ten minutes after you were done with the showing. Said they loved the place, and that you did an amazing job showing it off. We’re emailing back and forth now getting the contracts sorted out.”

Part of me was still certain that she was going to tell me that she was kidding, saying this only to get a rise out of me. But that wasn’t Marta’s style.

She was being serious.

“I’ll CC you the emails. It’s all stuff for Legal, but I want to keep you in the loop. Congrats, Sadie. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that this is going to do amazing things for your career. Oh, and there’s also the little matter of the commission,” she added with a smile.

Another call came in on my phone. I ignored that one, too.

“Yeah. Thanks.” I was so stunned that it was all I could say.

Marta chuckled. “You look like you’re going to need a little time to process this. Go ahead and take the rest of the day off. I’ll get everything handled on the contract end, and we can work through the rest together tomorrow. Nice work.”

“Thanks. Bye.”

Another chuckle from Marta, then the call ended.

I sat there for a while, staring at the screen like a dummy.

I’d made a sale. And not just any sale, ahugesale. The commission alone was more than I could wrap my head around. The condo was over two million, and they’d paid twenty percent over the asking price, which meant…

All I could do was stand up. And once I was on my feet, I opened my mouth and let out a “woo-hoo!”

Outside the office, I heard the thump-thump-thump of feet. A knock sounded at the door.

“Sadie?” asked Monica. “Are you alright in there?”

“You can open it.”

She did, Emmy curled in her arms. “Everything OK?”

“You kidding?” I asked, running over to her. “Everything’samazing!”

I scooped Emmy out of her arms and planted one kiss after another on her cheeks. Emmy opened her mouth and flashed me a big, gummy smile.
