My body was gripped with rage. My hands shook as the sweat dripped down my top lip. I stood over Jack, breathing heavily, watching as the blood coursed down the side of his face. The metallic scent of blood invaded my senses. I was no longer in control of anything. My anger and my emotions belonged to the other part of me now. The dark side. The one I tried to hide.

“Any last wishes?” I asked, as I raised the sledgehammer and brought it down on his right knee this time. The sound of his bones being crushed sent a thrilling rush of excitement through me.

Jack’s face twisted as a blood-curdling scream left his throat. Such a big man brought down so fast.

I left the sledgehammer down and climbed over him, wrapping my hands around his neck.

“How does it feel now?!” I barked. “Being so helpless!”

Jack made gurgling sounds as the blood rose to the rim of his lips.

Tears blurred my vision and the veins on my hands strained as I gripped his neck. “I’m giving you a chance to speak, but you’re being very fucking rude, Jack!”

The blood trailed down the side of his face. “Come on Jack!” I shouted.

I moved off his torso and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, ignoring the grunts he made.

He was fucking heavy, but it didn’t bother me, because I was completely driven now. I dragged him with both my hands, moving toward the edge of the building.

As if he knew what I was doing, he reached out to grab my leg and I glanced down at him for a split second. He was unrecognizable now, with blood smeared across his face and the side of his head dented from the force of the sledgehammer when I hit him. His one eye was shut closed.

I pushed him over the edge, watching as he plummeted to the ground. The sound of his body making an impact with the concrete sent a shudder through me. Jack was motionless. A breath I’d been holding left my lips. He was gone. I dragged the sledgehammer and took out my phone as I climbed down the flight of stairs. It rang and then went straight to my brother’s voicemail. Once I got into my car, I tried his number again, resting my forehead against the steering wheel, my breathing ragged.

“Hudson?” Matt sounded like he just woke up. “You haven’t called in ages. What’s up?”

“I did something,” I whispered as my shoulder caved in, my breath shuddering.

“What did you do?” Concern laced his voice now. “Tell me and I’ll help you fix it.”

“You know the guy that was found as a suspect for killing Cass?” I closed my teeth over my knuckles as I waited for him to respond.

“Yeah,” Matt said. “What about that?”

I stayed silent for a second, breathing heavily. My heartbeat pounded in my ears. “Hudson?”

“I killed him. His body is in billionaires row,” I said in a rush. “I’m afraid that his fall injuries will be inconclusive with the ones I gave him before I pushed him off the building.”

“JESUS-FUCKING-CHRIST!” Matt swore.

I could hear him shuffling in the background. “What did you do? You don’t even know that he was guilty. Fuck!”

“He admitted it.”

I wrapped my fingers around the steering wheel. My body was drained from energy. I didn’t really care about going back to cover up anything. The building was over nine hundred feet high. Maybe Jack’s injuries would match those I gave him. I called Matt purely out of instinct because if anything did come to bite me in the ass, I wanted someone else to know.

“Stay there,” Matt said. “I’m coming now.”

“I can’t.” I turned the key in the ignition. “I can’t stay.”

“Hudson—” I cut the call and headed straight to Saylor Towers. No one lingered in the foyer as I quickly made my way up to the penthouse.

Once I was in the penthouse, I pulled my clothes off and headed straight into the bathroom. The scalding hot water cascaded over my body as I scrubbed my skin. The pinkish color of blood pooled at my feet, before disappearing down the drain. Everything hurt now as my thoughts exited my mind.

I stood in front of the mirror a few minutes later as the hot water ran in the shower. My bruised palms clenched the sink as I drew my gaze up to meet my reflection in the mirror and what stood there was a shell of myself. My hair was disheveled, my mouth pulled into a thin line, and my dark eyes were empty, calm, and cool once again.
