I glance at him and his jaw clenches.

“A bunch of idiot board members,” he adjusts himself. “They can rot in hell for all I care. And I guess we never got the chance to have a proper conversation. Which is why I’m taking you out tonight.”

“What did they do?” I ask.

He shrugs. “I wouldn’t bring in outsiders to run the show and I thought Matt was smarter than that, but I was wrong. I know how business works and my dad knows that Matt is making a mistake, yet he’ll insist on letting the mistake happen, so he can then teach Matt a valuable life lesson.” I catch the undertone of annoyance in his voice, so I place my hand on his shoulder and gently massage it. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Yeah,” he says, reaching over and turning up the volume to the lyrics ofInto It,by Chase Atlantic.

“Where are we going?” I ask, settling back into my seat realizing that we’re heading away from Manhattan.

“Athens,” he says.

“Athens?” I ask quizzically.

“There’s a small town called Athens. I used to go there all the time.”

“How far is it?”

He shrugs. “About two hours or one, if I keep this speed.”

“What time will we get back?”

Hudson laughs as he casts a playful glance at me. “Parker. You have to give me some credit. We won’t be getting back early and that’s because we’re not coming back to Manhattan tonight. We’ll be back on Sunday.”

“What?! I didn’t bring any clothes,” I mutter. “We can’t just take a vacation whenever.”

“Says who? What would you have been doing tomorrow, anyway? Reading a book or hanging out with your best friend,” he says. “And the point is to just relax. I’m doing this for you. For us.” Hudson slips his fingers in between mine and rubs his thumb against my knuckles, lightly enough to send little shocks of excitement to the butterflies raging in the pit of my stomach.

“There’s nothing wrong with the things I do,” I point out. “And I still don’t have clothes.”

He turns to me, his eyes giving me a quick once over, before locking his eyes on mine. The look in his eyes is evident.Hunger. “That’s fine, I never really liked you in clothes anyway.”

I swallow hard as I face the road, just imagining what will transpire this weekend.
