“This is access to the hotel. For all the entry rooms,” he says. “You and I both have these, don’t tell Dad.”

This moment reminds me of what it used to be like when Matt and I used to play hide and seek so that our father couldn’t find us. It was our secret game. He’d hold my hand, and hug me close when dad started screaming in his drunken rage.

He’d help me a lot of the time until he began to chicken out and leave me prey to that asshole. Matt let go of my hand then. He let me get a beating.

I roll my eyes. “Like I will. You really forget how I am sometimes.”

Matt tries to smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. He knows he let me down. He knows he made mistakes and that time can’t go back and change all the damage.

“By the way, what does Sagol mean?” I ask as we head out of the building.

Matt laughs this time and it’s a real laugh. “It means thank you in Turkish. The G is sort of silent. So it’s like saying Saol.”

“Sagol,” I repeat. “Cool.”
