I’m Sorry

PARKER

I grab a bottle of red wine from Food Co. before I get a cab and it’s exactly 6:20 p.m. when I reach the apartment.

The evening air is cool on my skin as I climb out of the cab, gathering all my books and my bag along with the wine.

It’s been a long day and I just want to eat dinner, have a hot shower and crawl into my warm bed after, possibly reading more of Wuthering Heights, so I walk into the building and take the elevator up. I’m glad he didn’t text me again. I should have blocked his number but I couldn’t. It’s fucking weak of me, I know. Lex will bitch slap me if she only knew how stupid I’m being.

When I reach my floor, the elevator doors slide open and that’s when I look up and see him standing right outside the apartment door. I fucking clutch the books and wine tightly to my chest, because I almost drop everything.Hudson.

At first, I almost start to think I might be seeing things, but it’s him. He’s there. It’s not a dream and it’s certainly not a freaking illusion playing tricks on me.

His inky black hair is messy, roughly cut, and a little shorter than when I last saw him. He’s wearing a black t-shirt with the first few buttons open and exposing the smooth protruding lump of his Adams Apple, and a pair of dark jeans.

I suddenly feel like I can’t breathe anymore. The last time I saw him, he was threatening me and grabbing my hand. Yet, there he is standing outside the apartment as if he had all the right in the world.

“What are you doing here?” My voice sounds so small and distant.

He steps forward and then he seems to think better of it and pauses. “I know things ended badly between us and I wanted—needed to see you again, okay?”

“If I wanted to see you, I would have replied to your text. No means no and you should respect that,” I tell him as I walk towards him.

“You should just leave,” I say thinly.

I’m right outside the apartment door now and he’s standing a few inches away from me, staring at me for an oddly long time. Those haunting green eyes search mine. A part of me doesn’t want me to go and it’s like he knows, because he lingers there, watching me for a few silent seconds.

“Parker, I’m sorry,” he whispers, and then without any forewarning, he leans in and kisses me.What the fuck?

It’s an abrupt, hungry kiss as his fingers slide around my neck with his thumb running along the middle of my throat and he brings my face closer, his hot tongue seeking mine.

But the kiss only lasts for a few seconds because the apartment door opens and we quickly break apart. My face is burning with heat.

Lex is standing there with her hands on her hips, a judgmental frown in between her brows, with a guy who I can only assume to be Kyle, lingering in the background.

I’ve only seen the guy twice and his face isn’t a memorable one, but he should be a nice guy because he makes Lex happy, which is what is ultimately important to me as her best friend.

“You brought a date?” Her question is directed at me, yet she keeps her eyes fixed on Hudson. “You must be Hudson. I’m Lex. It’s good to finally meet you.”

I know Lex well enough to know that she wants to stab Hudson. In the eye. With a fork. A very sharp one.

“You must be the best friend,” Hudson says.

We all stand there in awkward silence until Kyle steps forward and clears his throat. “Well, I guess we should go in and eat now.”

I have no choice but to let Hudson in and he follows behind silently. Lex and I leave both of the guys in the living room as we head into the kitchen where Lex has a whole brown bag full of Chinese food that smells heavenly.

“I thought it was just us tonight,” I tell her as I grab four glasses from the cupboard.

“Well, I changed my mind and decided to invite Kyle. I didn’t know you were bringing Hudson,” she mutters. “I thought you two broke up, but I literally caught you two lip lock.”

“We did and I didn’t bring him. He was outside the apartment door when I came.” I lean against the counter-top and hang my head. “As for the kiss, he forced himself on me.”

“What are you going to do?” Lex asks.

I shrug, worrying my bottom lip with my teeth. “I don’t know.”
